Where did Converge begin?
Legacy Church is woven into a rich tapestry of faith with its roots in the Converge denomination, which has a deeply historical foundation. Converge, originally known as the Baptist General Conference, emerged from the 19th-century revivals, tracing its spiritual lineage back to Radical Pietism in Sweden. The denomination was formed by Swedish immigrants who, led by Gustaf Palmquist and fueled by a fervent Christian experience and revivalism, established a network of churches in the United States. These churches emphasized personal faith and evangelical zeal, characteristics that underpinned the rapid growth of the movement. The Swedish Baptist Seminary, now Bethel University, was founded in this period, further cementing the denomination's commitment to education and the spread of the Gospel.
By 1879, the Swedish churches had grown significantly, prompting the formation of a General Conference. As the members assimilated into American society, the denomination evolved, dropping its ethnic identifier to become the Baptist General Conference of America. The convergence of Scandinavian immigrants' dedication to faith and the subsequent nationwide expansion has led to a diverse association of autonomous churches, with missions in numerous nations, emphasizing the importance of cross-cultural ministry and unity in Christ.
